Chemical Storage Facility Stormwater Flooding Analysis

Houston, TX

Aulick Engineering performed a hydraulic analysis for a Global Specialized Chemical Storage Facility in Houston, Texas. Due to the harmful chemicals handled at the facility, the terminals have two separate stormwater systems. One system collects water and eventually discharges it into the adjacent Galveston Bay. The other system collects potentially contaminated water, routes it to pump pits, and pumps it to the wastewater treatment facility.

During significant rain events, water was escaping the stormwater network and flooding the pump pits, leading to pump malfunction and unnecessary costs for the owner. In September 2018, Aulick staff conducted a site visit to diagnose the problem areas. A comprehensive study was performed to determine which rain events caused flooding in which locations and to help identify potential solutions.
