Runway 5-23 Rehabilitation and Airfield Improvements at Grand Strand Airport (CRE)

North Myrtle Beach, SC

Runway 05-23 at the Grand Strand Airport (CRE) required a complete rehabilitation effort for the airport’s future development. The project involved a concrete overlay of Runway 05-23 and an overlay of Taxiway A, A1, A4 & A5. Additional work included pavement rehabilitation of a small portion of Taxiway A and A4 and new construction of the remaining pavement sections of Taxiway A2 & A3 along with new construction of Taxiways B & C.

Aulick Engineering was responsible for stormwater management, drainage design, erosion control design, and a C-SWPPP Report per Horry County and SC DHEC requirements. The project involved pavement removal of approximately 8.5 acres of paved surfaces; therefore, stormwater detention was not required. However, due to overall disturbance, post-construction water quality requirements were followed. Vegetated filter strips were installed to remove pollutants via a long, wide, and flat grass filter between the taxiway/runway edges and inlets. Dry swales with rock check dams in between inlets also provided water quality benefits.

In addition, Aulick was also responsible for full-time construction inspection on the project that included client coordination for field interpretations, review of monthly pay requests, coordination with the owner for necessary scheduling of required quality assurance testing, and conformance to safety and contract specifications.
